Money MattersThe dirty word that gets in the way of relationships!
There's a topic most of us don't like to talk about ? a taboo subject we hardly discuss with our closest friends as we're too embarrassed or ashamed that they may find out the truth. An issue so private, so personal, and so intimate that many of us hardly tell even our family members or partners the details of our history with it.
That's right, I'm talking about money. You know ? that stuff that "makes the world go 'round" but "can't buy me love?" Well, it may not be able to buy you love, but it can certainly make attracting it and keeping it far easier. Women in my workshops routinely tell me they want a man who makes more money than they do, and men in relationship studies report that on average they are looking for a woman their economic equal, which is why we so often see doctors marry doctors, lawyers marry lawyers, and service people marry other service people. So if you want to be with someone with deep pockets it would be wise to deepen your own.
Statistics tell us the number one issue couples fight about, break up and divorce over is money (the number two issue is parenting ? and having children isn't cheap ? so the two issues are often intertwined). Over 1.5 million individuals file for bankruptcy annually, the average American carries $8000 in credit card debt, and either won't live to see retirement or won't be able to afford to. These challenges are taking a huge toll on relationships and families. Money is such a sensitive topic, that even when we have plenty to share and enough to live comfortably we have anxiety or strong attachments to it that keep us from enjoying our lives and loved ones. As Coco Chanel said, "There are people who have money and people who are rich" and they aren't necessarily the same people!
